What Does It Take To Become A Qualified Pharmacist
Most people don't think much about a Pharmacist. They go to the pharmacy to pick up prescriptions the doctor has called in or hand carry the prescription from the doctor. What we see from the counter is people counting out pills and putting them in bottles the give to us. Sometimes we are asked to talk to a pharmacist and they appear to read the warnings that come with the medication. What we don't realize is that it takes seven years of training to become a pharmacist. What I want to talk about is just what Pharmacist Qualifications are and what the individuals had to go through to become a Pharmacist.
In The Beginning
Before a person can even get into Pharmacy school the are required to have at least completed at least 2 years of post-secondary study, although most applicants have completed 3 or more years. Within this 2 or more years they need college level classes in mathematics and natural sciences, such as chemistry, biology, and physics, as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences. Part of the Pharmacist Qualifications to get into a college of Pharmacy is a good score on the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT).
The Middle Once they begin their studies at Pharmacy school the start learning about Drug Therapy and interaction. There are classes in communication with other health care providers and how to dispense information to the public. They also learn professional ethics, concepts of public health, and medication distribution systems management. Besides the classroom training they get they spend about 1/4 of their time in a variety of pharmacy practice settings under the supervision of licensed pharmacists. After the Middle Once they graduate from Pharmacy College the training continues. Many take up 1-year or 2-year residency programs or fellowships. These programs often require a the completion of a research project. Even though these programs are not a requirement for licencing often programs are often mandatory for pharmacists who wish to work in hospitals. And Training Continues Pharmacist Qualifications include having a license for all U.S states, territories, and the District of Colombia. Forty-four States and the District of Columbia also require the Multi-state Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE). This is only one of the Pharmacist Qualifications that individual area require in addition to their degrees. There are also continuing education courses that must be passed for license renewal. This it to ensure all Pharmacist's keep up to date on new medications, interactions and distribution practices. One of these continuing education class is in ethics and public health. As you can see it isn't just counting and passing out pills that Pharmacist Qualifications address. These are highly educated and professionally dedicated individuals. The work at private pharmacies, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and some even go into Pharmacological Research. |
